If you were born in the 1970s and grew up in Penang during the 1980s, chances are your weekends often revolved around one place.

KOMTAR.

Back then, it felt like the centre of everything.

The building was still brand new.

Many of today’s popular shopping malls, such as Gurney Paragon and Queensbay Mall, had not even been built yet.

People came to KOMTAR to shop.

To eat.

To meet friends.

To run errands.

In addition, the adjacent old GAMA Supermarket was one of the island’s favourite places to shop, and the surrounding streets were always busy with people.

Interestingly, although there were far fewer cars than today, traffic around KOMTAR was already heavy.

Crossing the roads wasn’t always easy.

But somehow, everything seemed to revolve around this part of George Town.

Before Grab, There Were “Sapu Cars”

For younger Penangites or newcomers to the island, the term “sapu car” may sound unfamiliar.

Long before Grab became part of everyday life, these unofficial shared taxis were a common sight around KOMTAR.

Drivers would wait near the bus terminal looking for passengers heading in the same direction.

Unlike Grab today, they didn’t carry just one passenger at one stop.

They continued picking up more people along the journey until the car was full before heading towards their destination.

It wasn’t luxurious.

But it was fast.

Affordable.

And for many Penangites, it was simply part of daily life.

Together with the buses operating from KOMTAR, they connected people to almost every corner of Penang.

Fast Forward to 2026

Much has changed over the past four decades.

Grab has become part of everyday transportation.

The KOMTAR bus terminal continues serving thousands of commuters every day.

People now have far more choices when travelling around the island.

And for the first time in Penang’s history, another major chapter is beginning.

The Penang Mutiara Line LRT.

For many Penangites, this is something they have heard about for years.

Today, it is no longer just a proposal.

Construction is already underway.

Penang’s First Ever LRT Line

The Penang Mutiara Line LRT is the first Light Rail Transit system ever to be built on Penang Island.

Construction officially began in 2025, with major civil works gathering pace throughout 2026. The project is targeted to begin operations in December 2031, meaning it will take around six years to complete.  

Once completed, the line will stretch approximately 29.7 kilometres, making it one of Penang’s largest transport infrastructure projects ever undertaken.  

From George Town to Silicon Island

One of the most interesting things about the Penang Mutiara Line LRT is the route itself.

The line begins at Komtar, long regarded as Penang’s transportation heart.

From there, it travels south through many of the island’s busiest residential, commercial and employment areas before ending at Silicon Island, Penang’s future reclaimed township.

The line will also provide a seamless connection to Penang Sentral in Butterworth, making travel between the island and mainland much easier.

Just imagine it.

Instead of sitting in traffic while crossing the Penang Bridge, you board the LRT at KOMTAR and enjoy a smooth, uninterrupted journey all the way to Penang Sentral.

No traffic jams.

No searching for parking.

As the train glides across the strait, you can simply sit back and appreciate the scenery outside—the sparkling sea stretching into the distance, the Penang Bridge standing proudly beside you, and the green hills rising gently beyond the coastline.

Before you know it, you have arrived at Penang Sentral.

From there, your journey does not have to end.

You can continue exploring Butterworth by taking a bus or a Grab ride, or simply hop onto the KTM train, which connects you to many cities across Peninsular Malaysia, including Ipoh, Kuala Lumpur and beyond.

For many Penangites, expatriates and visitors alike, that opens up a whole new way of travelling.

A journey that is not only smoother and more convenient, but also surprisingly scenic.

And honestly… it sounds nice.

The line is expected to include 20 stations and two provisional stations, serving many important parts of Penang Island.

More Than Just Another Railway

Of course, the LRT is about moving people from one station to another.

But perhaps its biggest impact will be how it changes everyday life.

Imagine boarding the train at KOMTAR.

Within minutes, you arrive at USM for classes.

Or SPICE for an exhibition.

Or the airport without worrying about parking.

Visitors arriving in Penang may eventually find it easier to travel between Penang International Airport and George Town, making it more convenient to explore iconic attractions and heritage destinations such as Chew Jetty.

Expats working in the Free Industrial Zone could have another transport option besides driving.

For residents, daily commuting may gradually become less dependent on private vehicles.

Construction Is Becoming More Visible

If you have driven through Bayan Lepas, Gelugor or parts of Sungai Pinang recently, you may already have noticed construction activity.

Pier works, viaduct construction and station foundations are now taking shape along various sections of the alignment.

Traffic management plans have also been introduced in several locations as construction enters a more active phase. Authorities have advised motorists to expect temporary traffic changes while the project progresses.  

For now, these roadworks may require a little extra patience.

But they also serve as visible reminders that Penang’s first LRT is no longer just an artist’s impression.

It is gradually becoming reality.

A New Chapter for Penang

For those who remember the days of sapu cars waiting outside KOMTAR, the idea of boarding an LRT train from the very same area would have seemed almost unimaginable.

Yet cities evolve.

Transportation evolves.

And so does Penang.

The Penang Mutiara Line LRT will not replace the memories of old KOMTAR.

Nor should it.

Instead, it represents another chapter in the island’s story.

A story that began with buses and shared taxis.

Continued with ride-hailing services.

And is now entering an entirely new era of urban rail.

Perhaps, years from now, today’s children will one day tell their own stories.

Not about waiting for a sapu car.

But about taking Penang’s very first LRT across the island.
